Discover a fascinating science trick using packing tape to create a peephole in frosted privacy glass. Learn how this simple hack works and see what’s behind the frost.

Can you remember the last time you yearned for the ability to peer through frosted privacy glass? As it happens, the secret to one of those most popular trick motifs — the item is a clear piece of packing tape. What started as an accidental discovery has become a curious experiment, and we’re here to share what we found.

The Accidental Discovery

The inspiration for the modification is taken from one of the videos of the YouTube user TheFarmacyMan, who showed how sticking clear packaging tape to the frosted glass produces an effective peephole. He stumbled upon this hack by accident, and while he didn’t have a scientific explanation, one of the commenters offered an interesting theory: The adhesive in the tape might have filled up the etched texture of the frosted glass as the officials claimed. In this way, the glass reproduces the surface of a smooth, transparent material for a certain period before the frosting is applied.

Of course, we thought it only fitting to try this for ourselves. This is where the idea of using such a mundane tool to combat privacy glass just seemed so brilliant.

Putting the Tape Trick to the Test

With curiosity (and a roll of packing tape) in hand, we attempted this fix on two different frosted windows around the office. One was a professionally frosted window – an acid-etched window frosted in the manufacturing industry – and the other was a do-it-yourself frosted window using just an acrylic glaze with a sponge to achieve the privacy effect.

This actually begs my question. To be honest, we did not think it would click. You see, frosted glass’s purpose is to ensure that vision is somewhat impaired, and the notion that a strip of tape can fix that seemed entirely too convenient to me. Surprisingly, the results were as follows.

The Results

When we applied the packing tape to the professionally frosted glass, the result was instantaneous. Nevertheless, the glass was not completely made to look as clear as glass; a patch of clarity was made possible. What before were just vague ovals or irregular masses—trees, parked cars, or passersby—became identifiable forms.

Similar success was noted in the DIY frosted window; the screens looked great again. It leveled the liquid-like material of the glaze so that we could see through the window with more clarity. Once more, however, it was not nearly as clear as before for one to be let in for some specific objects and movements on the other side.

Why Does It Work?

Even if we are not scientists, we can agree with the explanation provided in the video’s comments. The majority of privacy glass is frosted by engrossing the surface with grooves or textures in the form of a mesh, etching the surface with an acid bath, or applying a coating on the glass. Afterward, those grooves diffuse the light because they don’t allow it to pass through them without bending, thus achieving a frosted look.

If you carefully apply clear packing tape, the adhesive fills in those grooves and smooths out the surface. This minimizes the diffusion of light, and more of it enters the frosted glass directly, resulting in clearer frosted glass.

Also, it is necessary to underline that the tape does not fully offset the frosting process but reduces the result in the area where the tape is placed.

Practical Implications

Even though this trick looks awesome, one cannot help but wonder about privacy issues with such a gadget. Bathrooms and office spaces require privacy, so frosted glass is commonly used. A piece of tape can partially obscure that privacy, which may be problematic to some.

This hack should come in handy if you use frosted glass for privacy purposes. Even if you wouldn’t go out of your way to use packing tape to gain a view through your windows, it is still quite enlightening as an exhibition of materiality.

Should You Try This?

Whether you want to learn more about the realities behind it or just try it for fun, the packing tape trick is easy to do. It is as simple as having a frosted glass area and some clear packing tape in hand. Place the strip of the tape on the glass, pressing the area beneath the tape into the clear glass.

It’s just important to think about where you want to try things out. Note that if you’re doing this in a communal area or median, you should not intrude on the rights of other people.

A Fun Experiment

This packing tape trick can be viewed as a wonder, as it demonstrates how things found in homes can react with each other. Whether you do it for the novelty of the experiment or to understand why the glass fogs up, it is an experiment that should be tried.

It may seem funny, but sometimes, even objects such as packing tape allow one to look through the privacy glass.
